As we stood in the church today, just three Sundays before Christmas, I found myself thinking about how we are commanded to sing to the Lord. Time and time again in scripture the word sing is repeated with strong intentionality. Make a joyful noise! Sometimes when in a room of folks singing off key and out of time with the leader, it does sound like noise to my common ears. Oh, but our Lord hears it at sweet, worshipful music. He accepts it as joyful praise lifted to Him. Beautiful music to His holy ears, from all of His children.
The book of Psalm is filled with the command to sing to the Lord.
Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things…Psalm 98:1
Oh, come let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our Salvation. Psalm 95:1
This directive from the Lord is that we should celebrate belonging to Him. We should come before Him with thanksgiving in our hearts, overwhelmed with an abundance of gratitude for all that He has done. We are to kneel before our Maker, for He is good. It for all of these reasons when Jesus was born all of creation was called to adore Him.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Psalm 95:6-7
That sweet, tiny, helpless baby was born to save the world. A King who lovingly allowed all of His glory to pour down in the form of a child, who would walk beside man on this earth. He would experience all that we experience in life and more. He would suffer and die for us. Oh, but the grave could not hold Him. For He IS Alive!
Today, I have many songs come to my mind as I read Psalm 95:1-7. I think the one that speaks deepest to my heart is Sing to the King by Passion. It’s lyrics read:
Sing to the King who is coming to reign. Glory to Jesus, the Lamb that was slain. Life and Salvation His empire shall bring. And joy to the nations when Jesus is King.
Come let us sing a song, a song declaring that we belong to Jesus. Sing to the King.
This Christmas season, I pray that you will sing to our King with every ounce of your spirit. If you belong to our Savior, then sing that song and declare that you belong to Him. He is the mighty Lamb that was slain. To us, the greatest gift, Salvation, He would bring. It is, for this reason, that forever more we should come, worship, adore, and fall down before Him. Today Dear One, sing to the King!
