For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 ESV
John 3:16 is likely the most widely known scripture verse in the world and yet it’s value is quickly overlooked. Do not miss the stunning picture God paints with His glorious words affirming the vastness of his love for you.
A great study method for understanding and digesting scripture is to break it down into question and answer segments. This helps tremendously with increasing your focus on what God is saying.
Let’s walk through John 3:16 together, asking questions and providing answers. Then we will draw some conclusions.
- Who loved? God loved.
- Love what? The world.
- How much? With such a great intensity (so much so)
- What did God do? He gave his Only Son to die in my place.
- Why? So that I would not perish, but have eternal life
How can it be that the God of the universe, Creator of all, cares for and loves you so very much that he provided such a loving gift?
God reinforces his love over and over again in his holy word. The Bible is truly his love letter to his children.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 ESV
Christ Jesus was sent by God as the perfect payment for our sins.
Consider what amazing love God has for you. He gave his only Son – willingly handed him over to face a horrible, brutal, death, because he loved you and desired to save you from such a fate.
Now, stand back and reflect on eternal life. It isn’t simply about living forever. Eternal life is about experiencing the divine life God intended for you. It is about forever worshipping my Jesus for who he is, not what he has done.
What a beautiful, perfect, glory filled eternity we will spend in holy communion with Christ Jesus because of how God loves us!
Take a moment today to thank God for loving you with such intensity, that before the foundation of the earth, he knew he wanted to save you! Talk about amazing love.
