Do You Need Relief for the Weary?

tired, worn and poured out womanDo you feel weighted down, burdened, exhausted and poured out? I’ve been there myself. I’m a wife, mom, small business owner, and serve as much as I can in ministry. I’d like to say I’m good at balancing all of it, but I’m just going to be real, I can’t tell you how many times I have forgotten the laundry in the washing machine and had to rewash it because, days later, it smells.

I do my best to remember to scrub the toilet bowls before they start to get that gross ring in them, but I usually fail. I try to be organized, and then I get overwhelmed and start chasing my tail. Most days I feel like a hamster on a wheel; running hard and getting nowhere.

How often do you find yourself there my friend? Do you ever end up in a crying heap on the floor quite simply because you just can’t seem to “get it together”? I’m guilty!

Matthew 11:28-30 provides a remedy to all the weary, tired, and spiritually broken in this world. It’s not about being the perfect wife, mother, business person or volunteer. It’s about leaning into our Savior and letting Him do what He does so effortlessly and lovingly; bear burdens.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

That word, all is such a beautiful word. It signifies an open invitation to anyone. It is here that Jesus calls us to himself. He reaches out to those who are tired, worn, weighted down by the world, broken by sorry, burdened with worry and spiritually bankrupt.

Jesus offers a promise of rest. All that is required is to seek him. Call out to him! Lean into his loving arms and let him pick us up when we cannot take another step. Like an infant crying out to her daddy, when we cry out to Our Father, he stoops down and lifts us up.

At the crazy pace at which this world spins, I must remind myself that only Jesus is the giver of rest. He bears our burdens whether from exhaustion, sin, empty labor, worry, or any other weight on our spirit.

Jesus shows his beautiful character to us as he calls us to learn from him. He is humble, compassionate, gentle, kind, tender and loving. He understands the deep ache of the lost and the pain of the broken.

And there Jesus offers…

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Lean into him and let Jesus be your Savior. Let him bear the burdens of your spirit. Only then will we find the rest we so desperately seek.

Matthew Poole’s said in his commentary of Matthew 11:30 “nothing makes it hard [to submit to Jesus] but our corruption. It is easy because we do not do it in our own strength. God is our help.”

Are you worn, tired, broken, and poured out? You can find the rest you seek when you trust in Jesus. He is calling to you. Won’t you come to him?
